Woman made up tale of attackers burning her legs in Summit Metro Park, authorities say

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Authorities say a woman made up the story about two men burning her legs with an unknown liquid at a Summit County Metro Park on Sunday.

An investigation by rangers, Norton police and the State Fire Marshal’s office found that the woman fabricated the story about the attack along the Chippewa Trail at Silver Creek Metro Park.

“The person who made the report admitted the injuries were self-inflicted, and the report she made was not accurate,” the park system said in a Facebook post Thursday.

The post said no one else was involved in the incident.

“We understand that this incident has caused significant fear for our park visitors,” the park system said in a statement. “We hope that the conclusion and outcome of this case will reassure those who were wary of visiting the trails, as there is no public threat resulting from this false claim.

“We hope through this unfortunate circumstance the person involved receives the care and support she needs.”

Lindsay Smith, a spokeswoman for the park system, said rangers are meeting with prosecutors in Barberton Municipal Court to discuss whether to file charges in the case.

The woman, who authorities said was in her 30s, was alone on the trail in Norton about 3:30 p.m. Sunday when two men approached her and doused her with an unknown liquid, authorities originally said.

She claimed two men threw the liquid at her and then bolted.
